Parent-Designated Adult Classes for the 2007-08 School Year

Children’s Hospital in Seattle offers classes for school staff from pre-school through elementary school in order to learn to help children with diabetes-related tasks at school. The parent designates an adult volunteer---usually teachers, office personnel, principals, or school parent volunteers---to attend a three-hour training session at Children’s Hospital. In order to become a parent-designated adult (PDA), the volunteer must have additional training provided by a Certified Diabetes Educator.

During the training, volunteers get an overview of diabetes and learn about:

  • blood sugar testing
  • insulin administration
  • ketone testing
  • hypoglycemia signs, symptoms, and treatment
  • glucagon administration.

Classes for 2007 take place on August 25, September 22, and October 20 from 9am-noon in room G1026. The class is free, and parents do not need to attend with their PDA. Park in the Giraffe parking lot and walk across the street to the Giraffe main entrance of Children’s Hospital. Room G1026 is to your left as you enter.

Please call Deann Atkins, RN, CDE at (206) 987-6478 with questions or to register. (Please note that this class is not designed for school nurses.)
